Duel in the Desert

2007-08 Duel in the Desert Competition

Regional Duels

  • Regional Duels impacted 56 four-year campuses for a total of 312 students representing over 20 different U.S. states
  • Each Regional Duel consists of a judging panel ranging from 3-12 professionals in the field of personal finance
  • Coordinate safe travel arrangements for one undergraduate student to serve as The University of Arizona Credit-Wise Cat liaison for host team support at each Regional Duel while complying with university directed policies

6th Annual National Duel

  • Impacted 64 students from 16 campuses representing 13 different states
  • Communicated with over 85 judges from all 8 Regional Duels and the National Duel by emailing the case, rules, criteria, and judges’ manual to support their role as a judge
  • Dan Iannicola, Jr. from U.S. Department of Treasury featured as key note speaker
  • Visa What’s My Score announced student selected for summer internship
  • Hosted a focus group session with SIFE faculty advisors to introduce new model that will be a test pilot at 2 campuses and projected to be the widely used model for 2009-2010
  • Total Media Reach was 514,451; Total Gross Impressions was 534,483 including universities’ Web sites and news feature of the National Duel by local CBS affiliate station which interviewed Credit-Wise Cats live on site at the Marriott
  • 90% of the participating students agreed that the analysis of the case study during this competition helped them understand more about their own personal finances
  • 58% of the participating students expressed interest in starting a money management program at their campuses
  • 80% of the participating students expressed interest in returning again next year
  • 33% of the participating students represented ethnic minority groups
  • 90% of the judges said they were very satisfied with the competition's overall value
  • 92% of the judges stated that the competition experience was worth their time and travel
